Apply for Alberta Health Card

Welcome to Calgary. As an international student, getting your Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan card is a very important step. This card allows you to get many medical services for free.

Here is how you can get your first card:

Step 1: Check your eligibility

You must have a valid study permit for at least 12 months. You must also plan to live in Alberta for at least 12 months.

Step 2: Get the application form

You can download the AHCIP form from the Alberta government website. You can also get a paper copy at a registry office in Calgary.

Step 3: Collect your documents

You will need three types of documents:

  1. Proof of your identity, such as your passport.
  2. Proof of your right to be in Canada, such as your study permit.
  3. Proof that you live in Alberta, such as a utility bill, a bank statement, or a rental agreement showing your Calgary address.

Step 4: Submit your application

The fastest way is to go to a registry office in person. There is no cost for this service. You can also mail your form and photocopies of your documents to the AHCIP office in Edmonton.

Step 5: Receive your card

Once your application is approved, your card will arrive in the mail. Keep this card with you at all times.

You should apply within 90 days of arriving in Calgary. If you need medical care before your card arrives, keep your receipts. You might be able to get your money back later.

For more details, visit the Alberta Health Services website or go to a local registry office. Safe travels and enjoy your studies.
